How a clinical ICU platform saved 149 hours of clinical time per day across NHS trusts
Situation
The clinical problem was real. The product experience was not keeping pace with it.
A clinical technology startup had built a platform to improve patient monitoring and workflow coordination in intensive care units. The clinical problem they were solving was real and significant. But the product's user experience was not keeping pace with clinical reality. Nurses and clinicians were spending too much time navigating the interface rather than focusing on patient care. The workflows in the software did not reflect how wards actually operated. The result was friction, inefficiency, and a product that was harder to adopt than it needed to be. The founder, a practising clinical director, brought Noran Design in to reshape the product experience from the ground up.

What We Did
01. Clinical UX research We spent time in clinical environments observing how the platform was actually used. We conducted interviews with nurses, registrars, and consultants to understand where the friction was and why. This research shaped every subsequent design decision. 02. Interface and workflow redesign We redesigned the core interface to match clinical workflow rather than software convention. Reduced the number of interactions required for common tasks. Surfaced the most critical information at the point it was needed. Designed for environments where speed and accuracy are not optional. 03. Accessibility and compliance review Clinical software must meet strict accessibility and regulatory requirements. We audited and updated the platform to ensure compliance without compromising usability. 04. Ongoing embedded advisory Post-launch, Noran Design remained embedded as an in-house advisory and execution resource. As the platform scaled to new NHS trusts, we continued to shape the product and support the team.
